An ongoing experiment in AI-generated moving images.
Beginning with a single image, this project explores how a familiar figure can unfold into unfamiliar bodies and possible identities. Two chapters have emerged so far, each following a different trajectory of transformation. The original image is presented alongside the videos, allowing viewers to trace the distance between the starting point and what it becomes.
Exploring new tools for making images is an important part of my artistic practice. Here, I approach generative AI through experimentation, paying attention to its possibilities, visual conventions and unexpected departures from my intentions. My assessment of the medium remains open. This is a work in progress, with further chapters to unfold as new questions and di-rections emerge.
A Body of Possibilities
Chapter I — The Octohuman
A familiar figure encounters an unfamiliar anatomy. Tentacular forms enter the portrait, suggesting a body that extends beyond its human outline. This chapter explores the tension between recognition and estrangement, imagining how another physical form might alter our sense of where the self begins and ends.
Chapter II — The Post-Gender Body
The portrait moves through changing appearances, shifting the visual cues through which gender is commonly read. What makes a face seem familiar, masculine, feminine or difficult to place? This chapter opens an experiment in the relationship between outward appearance, perceived identity and the expectations we bring to an image.
The Starting Image — Shanghai, 2017
This photograph of me, taken in Shanghai in 2017, is the point of departure for the entire experiment. The dark glasses, the hand resting against my chin and the black turtleneck give the portrait a distinctive visual vocabulary. Within the moving images, these details become recurring points of recognition as the figure begins to change.
The work unfolds in ten-second sequences, creating a kind of visual domino effect. Each new sequence picks up elements from what came before, reinterpreting them or introducing a further transformation. Through this succession of AI-generated variations, the portrait develops into an expanding chain of possible appearances and bodies.
